Eu já tinha ouvido falar que a série Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) era muito legal, que já ganhou diversos Emmys, Globo de Ouro, TCAs etc. Mas vi que era sobre “um time de futebol”, e eu só curto futebol na Copa do Mundo, então não considerei assistir. Maaaas… minha filha amou, e fiquei curiosa ! Resultado: adorei, e cá estou eu listando as lições de liderança aprendidas com o coach Ted Lasso.

Lasso, a coach of college-level American football, is unexpectedly recruited to lead an English Premier League soccer team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience in the sport.

O que me chama a atenção de cara é que o Ted Lasso não sabe nada de futebol. Como ser um líder assim, meu Deus? Realmente eu entendo que só dá certo quando se tem - e se nutre - uma combinação de fatores, que estão embutidos nestas lições.

LESSON 1
Courage is about being willing to try
Ted is a great role model for “willingness to try” new things. He experiments with players changing positions, with new tactics, and with new coaches on his staff.

Be open! Good ideas come from anywhere
He lets the person in charge of washing the jerseys make suggestions on tactics... that guy ultimately becomes a coach on his staff.

LESSON 3
Pay attention to the details
On multiple occasions, Ted demonstrates attention to detail. Be it specific things he remembers about people, how meticulous he is in designing the locker room, or the sweets he bakes for his boss.

LESSON 4
Move forward from mistakes
Being courageous Ted makes several mistakes, but he moves forward. He also moves forward when others make mistakes. He does not spend a lot of time thinking about the past... instead he chooses to live and act in the present.

Brené Brown talks about this concept a lot. Ted Lasso lives vulnerability...
although in some occasions he hides the things that hurt him the most, which results in him not being the best version of himself.

Tell the truth to those you lead
Other than his personal issues, Ted is very frank about the context the team is in. He is frank about his own shortcomings and about what the team can do better. Despite his discomfort, he still finds the courage to have the crucial conversations anyway, because he knows they will improve the individual and serve the culture of the team.

Ted realizes that nothing drives him more than the ability to develop his young players and help them a) become a great team and b) become grown and responsible men.

Coaching a team of high performers will likely mean managing large egos and resolving personality conflicts. Lasso tirelessly communicates his message that the team comes first, no matter your talent or superstar status. This is probably why the head coach is called the manager in English football.
