Chicago - A vice-presidente Kamala Harris obteve o apoio de mais da metade dos delegados do Partido Democrata e, assim, conseguiu confirmar que será a candidata do partido à Presidência dos Estados Unidos nas eleições deste ano.
A contagem foi feita pela agência Associated Press e divulgada na noite de segunda, 22. Kamala obteve apoio de ao menos 2.579 delegados, número bem acima do necessário para a nomeação, 1.976.
A conquista ocorre pouco mais de 24 horas após o presidente Joe Biden desistir de disputar a reeleição e indicar Kamala para a posição.
“Foi o processo de aglutinação de forças democratas em torno de uma candidatura mais rápido da história”, avalia Mauricio Moura, professor da Universidade George Washington e analista no programa "O Caminho para a Casa Branca", uma produção da EXAME e da Gauss Capital.
Assim, Kamala enfrentará Donald Trump, já confirmado pelo Partido Republicano, nas eleições em 5 de novembro de 2024.
A atual vice presidente tem 59 anos, e foi eleita com Biden nas eleições de 2020. Formada em direito, ela foi procuradora-geral da Califórnia e senadora antes de chegar à Casa Branca.

Segunda-feira agitada
Biden anunciou sua desistência na tarde de domingo, 21. Ele endossou Kamala logo em seguida. Nas horas seguintes, vários nomes do partido seguiram o mesmo caminho, dando apoio público à vice, inclusive nomes que poderiam disputar a Presidência.
Entre os rivais na disputa que a endossaram, estão os governadores Gavim Newsom (Califórnia), Josh Shapiro (Pensilvânia), JB Pritzker (Illinois), Phill Murphy (Nova Jersey) e Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan), além de Pete Buttigieg, secretário de Transportes, endossaram a candidatura de Kamala.
Com isso, estes democratas passam a ser opções para compor a chapa de Kamala como candidatos à posição de vice-presidente.
Na segunda, a candidata fez dois discursos. Pela manhã, em Washington, elogiou o legado de Biden. De tarde, em Wilmington, Delaware, fez ataques a Donald Trump e o associou a abusadores e golpistas.
Nesta terça, 23, Kamala fará um evento de campanha em Milwaukee, no Wisconsin, mesma cidade que recebeu a Convenção Nacional Republicana, na semana passada. Wisconsin é um dos principais estados em disputa nas eleições de 2024.
Doações em nível recorde
A campanha de Kamala divulgou ter levantado US$ 81 milhões nas primeiras 24 horas após a decisão de Joe Biden de desistir da disputa, e disse que este foi o maior valor já arrecadado por uma campanha em apenas um dia na história do país.
As doações vieram de mais de 880 mil doadores, sendo que 60% deles colaboraram pela primeira vez, segundo o comitê de Kamala.
