A cerimônia de enterro do ex-presidente americano Jimmy Carter reuniu os últimos cinco presidentes do país: Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, George W. Bush e Donald Trump. Também compareceu a vice-presidente Kamala Harris, derrotada por Trump nas últimas eleições.
O corpo de Carter foi levado na terça-feira ao Capitólio, em Washington, onde permaneceu até o funeral de Estado na quinta-feira. Carter, que governou entre 1977 e 1981, faleceu em 29 de dezembro aos 100 anos. Reconhecido por seu compromisso humanitário, recebeu o Prêmio Nobel da Paz em 2002.
Natural da Geórgia, Carter foi transportado em um avião militar até a Base Aérea de Andrews, próximo à capital. Em seguida, um cortejo fúnebre acompanhou seu caixão, coberto por uma bandeira americana, até o Memorial da Marinha, simbolizando seu serviço nas Forças Armadas.
Funeral de Estado
Carter foi o 13º ex-presidente velado no Capitólio, uma tradição iniciada com Abraham Lincoln. Durante o funeral, seu neto Joshua Carter e Steven Ford, filho do ex-presidente Gerald Ford, fizeram homenagens emocionantes.
“O que Jimmy Carter nos ensinou foi que honestidade era parte de sua alma”, disse Steven Ford. Joe Biden, em seu discurso, elogiou Carter como um "homem decente" e alertou sobre os perigos do "ódio" e do "abuso de poder".
Legado de paz
Após a Presidência, Carter foi aclamado por seus esforços humanitários e sua atuação nas relações com a América Latina. Ele denunciou ditaduras no Cone Sul, retirou o apoio ao regime de Somoza na Nicarágua e devolveu o Canal do Panamá aos panamenhos.
O ex-presidente será enterrado em sua cidade natal, ao lado de sua esposa, Rosalynn Carter, falecida em 2023. Para muitos, Carter permanece como "a personificação viva do que significa liderar com serviço, compaixão e justiça", nas palavras de Chuck Schumer, líder democrata no Senado.
